The right haircut can completely change how you look and feel. But with so many styles to choose from, how do you know which one will actually flatter you? The answer starts with understanding your face shape.
At Nisha Beauty Salon in Bahadurabad, Karachi, our stylists have been cutting and styling hair for over 13 years. We see every face shape walk through our doors, and we know from experience which cuts work best for each one. This guide walks you through identifying your face shape and choosing a haircut that enhances your natural features.
Before your next salon visit, take a few minutes to measure your face. Stand in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back and use a flexible tape measure or ruler:
Measure the width of your forehead at its widest point. Then measure across your cheekbones, just below the outer corners of your eyes. Measure your jawline from the tip of your chin to just below your ear on one side, then double that number. Finally, measure the length of your face from the centre of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
Compare these measurements to determine your face shape. If your face length is greater than your cheekbone width and your forehead is slightly wider than your jaw, you have an oval face. If your cheekbones and face length are roughly equal with a soft, rounded jawline, your face is round. If your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are all about the same width with a strong angular jaw, you have a square face. If your forehead is wider than your cheekbones and jaw with a pointed chin, you have a heart-shaped face. If your cheekbones are the widest part with a narrow forehead and jaw, your face is diamond-shaped. And if your face length is significantly longer than its width, you have a long or rectangular face.
Oval faces are the most versatile — almost any haircut works well. You can experiment freely with layers, blunt bobs, long waves, pixie cuts, or sleek straight styles. The balanced proportions of an oval face mean you have the freedom to follow trends or stick with classics.
Our recommendation: If you have an oval face, use your salon visit to try something new. A layered cut with face-framing pieces is universally flattering, and a blunt bob at jaw length looks particularly striking on oval faces.
The goal with a round face is to create the illusion of length and angles. Long layers that fall below the chin work beautifully, as do side-parted styles that add asymmetry. Avoid chin-length bobs that sit at the widest part of your face, and avoid blunt bangs that cut across horizontally.
Our recommendation: A long layered cut with a deep side part is one of the most flattering options. Volume at the crown also helps elongate a round face.
Square faces have strong, angular jawlines which are a beautiful feature. The best haircuts soften these angles with movement and texture. Soft layers, waves, curls, and side-swept styles work wonderfully. Avoid blunt, one-length cuts that emphasise the jawline.
Our recommendation: A layered cut with soft waves or curls that fall around the jaw creates a beautiful balance. Side-swept bangs also work well to soften the forehead.
Heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin. The best haircuts add width around the jaw and chin area while minimising the forehead. Chin-length bobs, layered lobs (long bobs), and styles with volume at the bottom are ideal.
Our recommendation: A chin-length bob with soft layers is one of the most flattering cuts for a heart-shaped face. Side-swept bangs can also help balance the wider forehead.
Diamond faces have high, wide cheekbones with a narrower forehead and jaw. The goal is to add width at the forehead and jaw while keeping the cheekbones as the star feature. Chin-length styles, side-swept bangs, and tucked-behind-the-ear looks all work well.
Our recommendation: A textured lob with side-parted bangs beautifully balances a diamond face shape.
Long faces benefit from haircuts that add width and avoid adding more length. Layers that start at the cheekbones, wavy or curly styles, and blunt cuts with bangs all help create the illusion of a shorter, wider face. Avoid very long, straight hair with no layers — it makes a long face appear even longer.
Our recommendation: A medium-length cut with full layers and soft waves is ideal. Bangs — whether full, side-swept, or curtain-style — are particularly flattering because they shorten the appearance of a long face.
Bring reference photos to your appointment. Even if you cannot get the exact same cut as someone with different hair texture, reference photos help your stylist understand the vibe you want.
Be honest about your lifestyle and maintenance commitment. A beautiful cut that requires daily styling is not practical if you prefer wash-and-go simplicity. Your stylist can recommend cuts that look great with minimal effort.
Consider your hair texture. Thick, fine, curly, straight, wavy — your natural texture affects how a cut will look and behave. A skilled stylist works with your texture rather than against it.
